Multipliers Book Quiz Questions
For my engineering students, I want calculated questions with selectable units in a drop-down box.BUT.I want to have bogus units included.For engineering, coming up with the correct unit is an assessable skill. There in no point sticking the correct (default) unit at the top of the selection box and giving the student a great big hint at what unit they should be using. Knowing the correct unit is THEIR job!P.S.
Creative genius; critical — ability to identify problems; finding a way through problems; strong learning orientation. Contrast with classic “intelligence” — the IQ test.
I seemed to have a little work-around in M2.4.1 where I could avoid the top unit multiplier defauting to 1.0 by building the question in with 'bogus' units having weird multipliers (like ) - then import the question. Seems this has been busted in M2.4.3 so I am back to square 1. That's only several hundred questions smashed up, because now I have a 1.0 on a supposedly bogus unit at the top of every unit drop-down box. This is why I put in 'fake' multipliers like 99999999, or -9999999, or 0.0000001 etc - to make those units 'bogus'. It's a bit of work, but it functions well enough in practice.The biggest issue is that the first unit in the list has default multiplier = 1.0, so is there a way to edit the default multiplier (individually in each question)?(I'm willing to hack the php for our use - at least until. When others realize how much we really need bogus units in the unit selection list).P.S. ' This is why the order is not important.'
I have no idea what order has to do with bogus units. Still mulling over it. Thanks Pierre;Yes, we used to use the typed units method, (e.g. 27kg) but it was very cumbersome to implement and required students to have a pro-forma of allowable unit formats. Should they type 'kgm2/s2' or is it 'kg.m^2/s^2' or something else.) This made it a lot of work to make a question robust enough to handle all correct possibilities since the FORMAT of the units was completely open. OK for a human marker, but a computer needs the FULL list of all possible correct unit combinations - which is a daunting task.e.g.20N = 0.02 kN = 0.00002MN = 20000 mN OK that's the easy bit.

I have written a program (VB) that generates Moodle that bypasses the nonselectable first unit in the question edit form (thereby allowing me to use a multiplier in the first unit other than 1). I thought it was busted in later Moodle versions, but turns out it was due to the same XML imported quiz, when exported from Moodle and re-imported, reset the default unit multiplier back to 1.
Hi Tim;Because it is too much of a hint (the student can identify the correct unit at the top of the list).I want the student to CHOOSE an appropriate unit, not identify the unit and THEN do their working accordingly.Knowing WHICH units are appropriate is a part of the assessment.OTOH: Text units achieves this, but. Fault-proofing of text units (e.g. 20 N) is too cumbersome for the question writer.Or here's a more trivial example. WHY does the top unit HAVE to be 1 anyway? What if someone likes to have the units listed in order because it is more natural presentation for the student. MJ, kJ, J, mJ, uJ) But since the multiplier is probably not convenient for MegaJoules, the author is forced to list like this (J, MJ, kJ, mJ, uJ).

Use a spreadsheet to generate a number of solutions and concatenate the cloze code into question text. What is the status on implementing? I'm currently using 2.4 and about to upgrade to 2.7. Has this been added to 2.7 or 2.8?
If not any plans to do so?I'm an applied math instructor and totally agree with everything Tim L. I need students to be able to calculate the answer and determine what the correct unit is. Choosing the correct unit from a randomized drop-down menu with distractor units is the perfect way to do this.
Using the text input element is too cumbersome for the question creator and it is almost impossible to account for all possible spelling/misspellings/cases and abbreviations - even when using wildcards.Regards,Lael. The calculated question type was built to test if the user can calculate a given numerical value from a mathematical formula that is not necessarily given in the question text i.e. Circle area from the radius.The unit parameter was added to allow the user to express the numerical value in various valid units.This is why you need to specify a valid numerical factor for each unit to convert the numerical result in a correct answer.
For the circle area each unit should be a 'square' unit.( cm 2, m 2, in 2,ft 2)The default unit with a 1 factor is defined following the calculation done in the equation you use to calculate the answer.You can set your formula so that it calculates in m 2 although the radius is expressed in the question text in cm.Given this, the natural way to express the units is NOT randomize but natural like mm 2, cm 2, m 2.If you want to test in which unit you can express a given physical quantity then a multiple choice question will be the right way to do it.
